Sanju Samson Shines with Century in IPL 2026 Victory for CSK
Samson's Stellar Performance
In a thrilling match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on April 11, Sanju Samson, a key player for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), made a remarkable comeback by scoring a century against the Delhi Capitals during IPL 2026.
After facing challenges earlier in the season with scores of 6 and 9 against teams like Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings, respectively, Samson showcased his talent with an impressive 115 runs off just 56 balls. His innings included 15 boundaries and 4 sixes, achieving a strike rate of 205. This performance, alongside a 113-run partnership with Ayush Mhatre, who contributed 59 runs off 36 balls, helped CSK set a formidable total of 211/2 in their 20 overs.
Despite initial criticism regarding his slow start in the tournament, Samson's century not only silenced his detractors but also marked a significant return to form.
Samson Thanks a 'Lucky Person'
Following his impressive century, Samson attributed his success to a 'lucky person' who provided unwavering support during his challenging times in IPL 2026.
In an interview with former Indian captain Ravi Shastri after the match, he expressed gratitude, referring to Shastri as his 'lucky person' and credited their pre-match conversation for boosting his confidence.
"It feels amazing, thanks to you (Shastri). You seem to be my lucky charm before every game, so I hope you can join us for all the matches," Samson remarked.
A Career Milestone
This century marks the fourth of Samson's career, adding to his previous scores for the Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals).
At 31 years old, he has raised expectations following his standout performances in the T20 World Cup 2026, where he played pivotal roles in matches against the West Indies, England, and New Zealand. His early struggles in IPL 2026 had put him under scrutiny, but this century has certainly changed the narrative.
Samson became the first player to score a century in the current IPL season and was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.
Reflections on Failure and Fundamentals
During the post-match presentation, Samson emphasized the importance of returning to basics, acknowledging his past failures and the need to reset both mentally and physically.
"Honestly, I have faced many failures. They teach you how to bounce back. You start questioning whether to push harder or adjust your game plan, which can be mentally taxing," he explained.
"At 31, I've spent considerable time in this sport, and it's crucial to understand my fundamentals. Getting back to basics mentally and physically is essential for my performance," he added.
Upcoming Matches
With his recent performance, Samson has accumulated 137 runs in four matches, averaging 45.66 with a strike rate of 182.66. He will next take the field when CSK faces the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Chepauk Stadium on April 14.
