Sanju Samson Reflects on Virat Kohli's Fitness Guidance

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson recently discussed the valuable advice he received from cricketing icon Virat Kohli during a gym session. This guidance focused on fitness, lifestyle choices, and discipline, which Sanju has attempted to incorporate into his own life.

In a conversation on JioStar's 'Believe', Sanju praised Virat's intense dedication in the gym. He recalled how Kohli emphasized the importance of a proper diet and lifestyle for international cricketers. Although Sanju initially followed this advice, he admitted that he struggled to maintain it over time.

"Virat bhai is straightforward and clear about what needs to be done. His passion in the gym is inspiring, and I admire that about him. During a team camp, I asked him for advice, and he stressed that lifestyle is crucial for success. He shared insights on nutrition that could aid recovery and warned against foods that could hinder performance. He advised that maintaining this discipline for a decade could lead to a successful career. I followed his guidance for about a year and a half, but eventually lost focus," he shared.

Choosing His Own Path

Sanju also addressed his mindset leading up to the T20 World Cup, particularly after losing his position as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter to Ishan Kishan. He expressed a desire to step away from the relentless competition and focus on enjoying the game.

"I recognized the ongoing rat race in our sport and decided before the 2026 T20 World Cup that I would not participate in it. I want to enjoy playing cricket. At 31, I have a few years left, and I intend to play on my own terms. No one will dictate how I should bat or what I should do; I will make those decisions for myself," he stated.

"I will play with respect, enjoy the game, and support my teammates, but I will do it my way. After the 2024 World Cup, I didn't expect to be part of the 2026 squad. So, planning for 2028 seems premature. If I am needed and performing well, everything will align. If not, I remain grateful for my achievements, including being named Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup."
