Sanju Samson Discusses His Role in T20 World Cup 2026

Sanju Samson, a prominent player for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), recently addressed the decision that saw him lose his place in India's starting lineup to Ishan Kishan during the early stages of the T20 World Cup 2026.

Both players were named in the 15-member squad as wicketkeeper-batters, but Kishan was favored due to his impressive return to form in domestic cricket. Samson's inconsistent performance in the T20I series against New Zealand prior to the tournament, alongside Kishan's outstanding form, made the selection straightforward.

Despite this setback, Samson made a significant impact by scoring vital runs in three key matches, including a crucial Super 8 game against the West Indies, a semi-final against England, and the final against New Zealand, ultimately helping India secure a historic title defense and earning the Player of the Tournament accolade.

Samson Acknowledges Kishan's Hard Work

In a recent episode of the Super Kings Podcast hosted by former Indian cricketer Abhinav Mukund, Samson reflected on his initial exclusion from the playing XI, acknowledging Kishan's dedication in domestic cricket. He expressed understanding of why Kishan earned the starting position.

"Ishan had an exceptional Mushtaq Ali Trophy, leading Jharkhand to victory and showcasing a remarkable comeback story. While I focused on my own performance, I recognized that Ishan had also put in tremendous effort," said the CSK wicketkeeper-batter.

Samson noted, "After being out of the system for two years, he worked diligently in domestic cricket to reclaim his spot."

Pressure and Realization of Competition

Samson opened up about the pressure he felt after underperforming in two T20 matches, admitting that he sensed Kishan was vying for his position following Kishan's strong domestic performance and century.

"When he scored that hundred in Trivandrum, I thought to myself, 'Sanju, it's time to step aside. He deserves it more than I do. I had my chances but didn't capitalize, while he is in phenomenal form,'" Samson recalled.

He further elaborated, "Kishan came off the Mushtaq Ali Trophy with all the right momentum and scored a century just before the World Cup. At that moment, I realized it was time to let go."

Performance Statistics

In the tournament, Sanju Samson emerged as India's top run-scorer, accumulating 321 runs with an average of 80.25 and a striking strike rate of 199.37 across five matches.

In contrast, Ishan Kishan scored 317 runs, averaging 35.22 with a strike rate of 193.29 in nine matches.
