Sanju Samson Faces Heavy Fine After Rajasthan Royals' Over-Rate Violation

Ahmedabad: The captain of Rajasthan Royals, Sanju Samson, has been penalized with a fine of Rs 24 lakh due to his team's second over-rate infringement during their recent match against Gujarat Titans (GT), where they faced a significant defeat by 58 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday night.

According to a statement released by the IPL on Thursday, both Samson and the entire Rajasthan Royals squad have been fined under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct. The remaining players in the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will incur a fine of either Rs 6 lakhs or 25% of their match fees, whichever amount is lower.

Previously, Rajasthan Royals had an over-rate violation under the captaincy of Riyan Parag, who was fined Rs 12 lakh after leading the team to victory against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. In that match, Samson participated only as an impact player due to a finger injury.

Other captains who have faced fines for over-rate issues in IPL 2025 include Hardik Pandya from Mumbai Indians (MI), Rishabh Pant of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and Rajat Patidar from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

In the match itself, Rajasthan Royals struggled on a red-soil pitch, with left-handed opener B Sai Sudharsan shining brightly by scoring an impressive 82 runs, helping GT reach a total of 217/6. In response, pacer Prasidh Krishna delivered a stellar performance, taking 3 wickets for 24 runs, as GT bowled out RR for 159 runs in just 19.2 overs.

For Rajasthan Royals, aside from Shimron Hetmyer (52), Samson (41), and Parag (26), no other players managed to score in double digits. With this victory, GT has now secured their fourth consecutive win in the tournament, placing them at the top of the IPL 2025 standings.

Currently, Rajasthan Royals, the champions of IPL 2008, find themselves in seventh place on the points table after suffering their third loss in five matches. They are set to face Patidar-led RCB in a match scheduled for Sunday afternoon at their home ground, the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
