A New Era in Bengal Politics

The goddess of time, shrouded in darkness, spins the wheel of eras slowly yet surely. This post was shared on May 4 by renowned economist Sanjeev Sanyal following the BJP's historic victory in the Bengal elections. Many interpret this enigmatic post as a nod to the shifting political dynamics in Bengal. Some speculate it hints at his potential entry into the state's power corridors, especially given concerns about the BJP's lack of a robust financial strategy to manage Bengal's economy. Interestingly, few are aware that Sanyal himself hails from Bengal. So far, only five ministers have taken their oaths alongside Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Currently, Suvendu oversees the finance, home, education, health, industry, and commerce ministries. The BJP faces a dilemma as it lacks a legislator with high-level economic expertise. Meanwhile, a report from a media outlet suggests that Sanyal, a member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (EAC), is a frontrunner for the finance minister position.

BJP's Experiment with Bureaucrats

Bringing experienced bureaucrats into top political roles is not a novel approach for the BJP. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri exemplify this trend. The signs are clear. At Suvendu's oath-taking ceremony, Sanyal was seen donning a traditional Bengali dhoti-kurta. His wife, Smita Barua, who played a crucial role in garnering support from female voters for the BJP, was also present. She tweeted, 'Witness to history.' Since the election results were announced on May 4, Sanyal has participated in numerous interviews and penned articles for various media outlets, discussing Bengal's economic decline and potential recovery strategies. He stated in an interview with a publication, 'Kolkata is not dead; it has been murdered, and I am a witness to it.' He also addressed the murder of Suvendu's aide, Chandranath Rath, and a bomb attack in Bengal that injured five BJP workers.

Sanjeev Sanyal's Legacy

Sanjeev Sanyal is the great-nephew of the revolutionary freedom fighter Sachindra Nath Sanyal, who was a mentor to Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad. His great-grandfather, Nalinksha Sanyal, served as the chief whip of the Congress in the undivided Bengal provincial assembly. An economist closely associated with the BJP remarked to a media outlet, 'He embodies a blend of Bengali roots and global experience. He understands Bengal on both emotional and intellectual levels, as well as how modern economies function on a global scale.'
