Sanjay Gaikwad Faces Police Complaint for Assaulting Canteen Staff Over Food Quality

Incident Overview

On Friday, Mumbai Police initiated a non-cognisable complaint against Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad following an incident where he allegedly assaulted a canteen employee at the MLAs’ hostel. This action was reportedly triggered by his dissatisfaction with the quality of food served, as reported by a local news outlet.

Legal Implications

A non-cognisable complaint indicates that police cannot arrest Gaikwad without a warrant, and they require court approval to proceed with an investigation.

A video circulating on social media captured Gaikwad's aggressive behavior towards the canteen staff, where he was seen confronting the operator, refusing to settle his bill, and physically assaulting a worker.

Reactions from Officials

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned Gaikwad's actions as 'unacceptable' and urged the Legislative Council Chairperson and Speaker to address the situation. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also expressed his disapproval and stated that he had reprimanded the MLA.

On the same day, the Marine Drive Police Station filed a suo motu non-cognisable complaint against Gaikwad and an aide who was also involved in the incident, according to reports.

Details of the Complaint

A police officer disclosed that the complaint includes charges related to causing bodily harm and provoking a breach of peace.

In a statement, Gaikwad expressed no remorse for his actions, asserting that the quality of food in a government canteen should meet high standards due to the diverse clientele it serves.

He remarked, 'I do not regret what I did. As a public representative, I must respond appropriately when democratic dialogue fails.'

Canteen Operations Suspended

In response to the incident, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration issued a suspension notice to Ajanta Caterer, the canteen operator, following an inspection. The notice stated that their license, valid from June 26, 2024, to September 27, 2027, is suspended immediately, prohibiting them from selling or distributing food items until further notice.
