Sangram Singh Prepares for MMA Showdown in Argentina
Pre-Fight Face-Off and Statements
On Saturday, MMA star Sangram Singh and rising French fighter Florian Coudier met at the Buenos Aires Arena ahead of their eagerly anticipated match scheduled for April 5. While Sangram maintained a composed demeanor, Florian's excitement was palpable. He expressed his determination to not allow Sangram to dominate the fight, citing his analysis of Sangram's previous matches and insights from his coaching team regarding Sangram's vulnerabilities. The 83-kg bout is set to commence at 6:20 PM local time on Sunday, which translates to around 3 AM Indian time on Monday. According to a press release, India's Ambassador to Argentina is expected to attend the fight.
Challenges and Support
Sangram Singh, a double Commonwealth heavyweight champion, emphasized his belief in humility over boasting. As the first Indian to compete in combat sports in Argentina, he feels a significant responsibility and refrains from making statements that could harm the country's reputation. He respects his opponent and the sport, asserting that true champions are defined by their relentless pursuit of excellence. Notably, Sangram has previously avoided grand claims before his MMA bouts in Georgia and Amsterdam, where he achieved success with relative ease. His current challenge lies in managing his weight, as he has exceeded the two-kilogram tolerance by 100 grams. To address this, he has limited his water intake and trained intensively with his coach Bhupesh at La Macao Fitness Centre. Sangram mentioned that he would indulge in the churma laddu from home only after meeting his weight requirement.
The Fight and His Journey
Organized by Samurai Fight House, this fight marks Sangram Singh's third appearance in MMA. He expressed pride in participating in SFH28 in Argentina, aiming to impress a South American audience. This event represents his largest platform to date, and he is determined to make every Indian proud. His transition from professional wrestling to MMA has been remarkable.
Rigorous Training Regimen
In the days leading up to the fight, Sangram focused on yoga to enhance his flexibility. Under the guidance of coach Bhupesh Kumar, he practiced traditional techniques while integrating modern strategies with his sparring partner. Coach Bhupesh highlighted the team's emphasis on Sangram's transitions, ground control, striking combinations, and overall fitness. Significant improvements have been noted in his kickboxing skills, as well as in his endurance and conditioning, which are crucial for the three rounds of five minutes each in the match. Prior to arriving in Buenos Aires, Sangram underwent intensive training in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Delhi with a dedicated seven-member support team. He credited his time with coach Bhupesh for elevating his understanding of MMA.
A Multifaceted Career
Sangram Singh is not only a former Commonwealth heavyweight champion but also serves as the Fit India icon and brand ambassador for the Government of India. His background includes being an international-level Greco-Roman wrestler and a long-time participant in national camps. Following his journey through professional wrestling, acting, modeling, and motivational speaking, he is now set to compete in his third MMA fight.
