Patna, Apr 15: Samrat Choudhary has officially taken the oath of office as the Chief Minister of Bihar, marking a significant milestone as the first individual from the BJP to assume this role. The oath was administered by Governor Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (retd).

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by prominent leaders from the ruling NDA coalition in Bihar, which includes the BJP, JD(U), and three other parties.

Notable attendees included Union Ministers J P Nadda and Chirag Paswan, along with Nitish Kumar and all NDA MLAs.

Nitish Kumar, who has transitioned to a Rajya Sabha MP, stepped down from his position as Chief Minister on Tuesday, dissolving his cabinet where Choudhary served as Deputy Chief Minister and held the vital home portfolio.

In addition to Samrat Choudhary, two Deputy Chief Ministers from the Janata Dal (United) faction, Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav, are also set to take their oaths.

Choudhary, who joined the BJP in 2017, was appointed as the leader of the legislative party on Tuesday, in the presence of key figures such as BJP chief Nitin Nabin and Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who was designated as the "central observer" for this leadership change.

Throughout his political career, he has held various significant portfolios, including Urban Development, Housing, and Panchayati Raj, before becoming Deputy Chief Minister in 2024.

With Nitish Kumar's departure after two decades in leadership, Bihar is entering a new phase of governance.

Samrat Choudhary’s inauguration is anticipated to signal the beginning of a new political era in the state.
