Salah's Injury Raises Concerns Ahead of Egypt's Historic World Cup Knockout Stage
Salah's Injury Overshadows Historic Qualification
After Egypt secured their first-ever knockout stage qualification in the FIFA World Cup with a draw against Iran, coach Hossam Hassan expressed concerns regarding star player Mohamed Salah's fitness. Salah requested to be substituted during the match, raising alarms about his condition as he left the field 12 minutes into the second half. The coach indicated that it is premature to assess the severity of the injury.
Fitness Updates on Other Players
In addition to Salah, left-back Ahmed Fatouh will also be evaluated for an injury. However, there is optimism surrounding midfielder Hamdi Fathi, who missed the match against Iran but is expected to recover in time for Egypt's upcoming round of 32 clash with Australia on Friday.
Coach's Confidence in the Team
Despite the injury concerns, Coach Hossam Hassan remains confident in his squad, which finished second in their group with a record of one win, one draw, and one loss, trailing Belgium on goal difference. He stated, "I have complete confidence in everyone in the squad," emphasizing the strength and capability of his players.
"I do not worry about missing players. If I worried every time we had an injury, then I would not be fit to coach the Egypt national team," he added.
Hossam expressed pride in Egypt's historic advancement to the knockout stage, stating, "We will prepare ourselves, work hard, and do everything we can for what is coming next."
Dramatic Draw Secures Knockout Spot
Iran remains in the running for a knockout stage spot as one of the best third-placed teams, having drawn all their matches and accumulated three points.
Egypt started the match strongly, taking the lead when Mahmoud Sabre scored from close range after Salah's deflected shot was saved by goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.
Iran had a chance to equalize early on when Mehdi Taremi was fouled by Mohamed Abdelmonem, but Mostafa Shobeir saved the resulting penalty.
Shobeir made another crucial save against Milad Mohammadi before Iran equalized through Ramin Rezaeian, who capitalized on a loose ball.
The Egyptian goalkeeper continued to shine, making key saves, including one from a misjudged cross and another against Shoja Khalilzadeh.
In the second half, Egypt maintained possession, mindful of Belgium's match against New Zealand, which could affect their group standing.
Iran pushed for a late winner, but a stoppage-time goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR review. Shobeir's final save against Saeid Ezatolahi ensured Egypt secured a vital point and progressed to the knockout stage.
