Sakib Hussain's Inspiring Journey: Ishan Kishan's Generosity Shines Through
Sakib Hussain's Journey in IPL
Sakib Hussain, a pacer for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), shared a touching story about the support he received from his teammate, Ishan Kishan, during his financial hardships. This year marked Hussain's debut season in the IPL, where he emerged as a vital bowler alongside Eshan Malinga and captain Pat Cummins.
The Bihar-born bowler was signed by SRH for INR 30 lakh as an uncapped player during the IPL 2026 mini-auction held in December. Previously, he was part of the KKR squad in IPL 2024 but did not play any matches and went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction despite registering at a base price of INR 30 lakh.
Hussain's impressive performances in domestic tournaments like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Ranji Trophy led to his second IPL contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad, establishing him as one of the most promising young fast bowlers.
Ishan Kishan's Support for Sakib Hussain
Ishan Kishan exemplified true leadership by supporting Sakib Hussain during his struggles with a recurring ankle injury. Upon noticing the young bowler's difficulties, Kishan discovered that Hussain was using low-quality footwear that lacked the necessary grip for high-intensity bowling.
Understanding that Sakib could not afford proper shoes due to financial limitations, Kishan generously gifted him six pairs of Adidas Adipower spikes. In an interview with ESPN Crincinfo, Hussain recounted how Kishan asked about his preferred brand and then personally purchased the shoes for him.
"I have six pairs of shoes from Ishan. He asked me what I was wearing, and when I told him Adidas Adipower, he said he would get them for me," Hussain shared.
The Impact of Ishan's Kindness
Kishan's thoughtful gesture significantly boosted Hussain's morale, showcasing the strong camaraderie within the Sunrisers Hyderabad team. Due to his humble background, where his father worked as a farmer and daily wage laborer, Hussain struggled to afford professional cricket shoes.
Originating from Gopalganj, Hussain faced numerous challenges on his path to professional cricket, often relying on the support of those who recognized his talent early on.
A Mother's Sacrifice and a Son's Determination
Reflecting on his journey, Hussain recalled how he could not fathom owning expensive spikes during his early cricketing days. He emotionally recounted how his mother once arranged money for his first proper pair of shoes, motivating him to earn respect for his team and strive for success in the IPL.
"How could I wear shoes worth 12,000 or 15,000 rupees back then? You can't find shoes for 200-300 rupees on the roadside. When I started wearing proper shoes, my legs were shivering because I was bowling without spikes," he explained.
Hussain's mother supported him during his teenage years, providing him with the funds he needed to buy shoes. "When I came to the IPL, I wanted to earn respect for my team," he added.
Sakib Hussain's IPL Debut
Thanks to Kishan's generosity and his mother's sacrifices, Sakib Hussain made a remarkable IPL debut, taking four wickets, including those of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Donavan Ferreira, Jofra Archer, and Ravi Bishnoi, with impressive figures of 4/24 at an economy rate of 6.00 in four overs.
In his inaugural IPL season, Hussain claimed 15 wickets, including a four-wicket haul, with an average of 26.46 and an economy rate of 9.45 across 11 matches.
