Sudharsan's Injury Forces Him Out of the Series

Tamil Nadu cricketer Sai Sudharsan has been officially ruled out of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, which is set to commence on August 15. The Indian team, captained by Shubman Gill, is currently engaged in a three-day practice match against Sri Lanka XI at the Nondescripts Cricket Club in Colombo.

Sudharsan did not travel with the squad to Sri Lanka, opting to remain in Bengaluru for rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. He suffered a toe injury during a two-match unofficial Test series against Sri Lanka A, where he impressively scored 332 runs, including two centuries, averaging 166.00 across four innings.

The management had hoped he could join the team before the first Test at Galle International Stadium, but time is running out for the young left-handed batsman.

Rehabilitation and Medical Advice

While Team India is busy with their practice match in Colombo, Sudharsan is continuing his rehabilitation in Bengaluru. Initially, it was anticipated that he would start batting at full intensity in the nets, allowing the medical team to assess his readiness for the Tests.

However, the medical staff has advised against rushing his return, emphasizing the need for more time for proper healing before he can safely return to competitive red-ball cricket. With the first Test just a week away, it appears unlikely that Sudharsan will receive the necessary medical clearance to participate in this important series.

"Sai Sudharsan has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. Doctors have recommended additional time for biological healing. While there has been significant improvement, it is not yet sufficient for a safe return to Test cricket," stated the latest update from Sports Science.

Devdutt Padikkal Steps Up

In Sudharsan's absence, Devdutt Padikkal has taken the No. 3 batting position in the ongoing practice match against Sri Lanka XI, scoring an impressive 103 runs off 121 balls, which included 14 boundaries. This performance strengthens his case for inclusion in the Test squad.

Padikkal was already considered a backup option should Sudharsan be unable to play, and his century in the practice match has likely secured his spot in the playing XI for the opening Test of the two-match series in Galle.

Potential Replacements for Sudharsan

With Sudharsan's exclusion from the Sri Lanka Test series almost confirmed, the selectors and team management must identify a replacement batter to join the squad ahead of the Test series opener at Galle International Stadium.

Reports suggest that Sarfaraz Khan and Shaik Rasheed are strong candidates to fill Sudharsan's role. Sarfaraz last played in a Test match during the home series against New Zealand in November 2024 and has been striving to return to the senior red-ball setup.

Despite being part of the India squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, he did not get any playing time. However, he impressed with a strong innings of 92 for India A against England Lions in Canterbury.

Shaik Rasheed, who was part of the India A squad for the unofficial Test series against Sri Lanka A, scored 63, 20, and 45 in three innings, totaling 128 runs. He has shown solid technique against both spin and pace in subcontinental conditions.

The 21-year-old was the top run-scorer for Andhra in the 2025/26 Ranji Trophy season, accumulating 627 runs, including three centuries and two fifties, at an impressive average of 89.57 across eight matches. Both players have strong domestic credentials, making them viable options for the national selectors.
