Sachin Tendulkar Shares Insights on His Favorite Captains and Leadership Experiences
Sachin Tendulkar's Favorite Captains
In a recent Reddit 'Ask Me Anything' session, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar revealed that his top choices for favorite captains are Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni. Reflecting on his own experiences as the captain of the Indian Test team, he expressed admiration for South Africa's captain, Temba Bavuma.
Challenges of Leadership
Tendulkar, who led India in 25 Test matches from 1996 to 2000, described the captaincy as a significant honor but acknowledged the challenges that came with it. He noted, "Leading the team was a great privilege, but I often lacked the autonomy to select my squad entirely. The BCCI has evolved into a much more professional body compared to the 1990s, a time when Indian cricket faced considerable difficulties."
His captaincy period was marked by struggles, culminating in his resignation in March 2000 after a home series loss to South Africa. He later turned down an opportunity to reclaim the captaincy in 2007, which was eventually taken over by Dhoni.
Commendation for Temba Bavuma
Tendulkar also commended Bavuma for his leadership, especially following South Africa's victory in the 2025 World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's. He stated, "I have great respect for Temba Bavuma’s leadership. He has consistently led from the front and achieved remarkable outcomes for South African cricket. Their ICC title win is a significant boost for global cricket!"
Lighthearted Moments and Mentorship
In a humorous segment, Tendulkar was asked which legendary batsmen he enjoyed bowling to the most, including names like Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting. He quipped, "I enjoyed bowling to all of them because I managed to get them all out! Haha!"
When discussing his mentorship of Sanju Samson leading up to India's 2026 Men's T20 World Cup victory, Tendulkar shared a playful exchange. Samson had previously credited Tendulkar for providing crucial guidance during a challenging time in his career. Tendulkar humorously responded to a question about his advice to Samson with, "Nee po mone Dinesha!" which translates to a playful dismissal in Malayalam, often used to tell someone to 'get lost.'
Sachin Tendulkar's Cricket Legacy
Regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in cricket history, Tendulkar played for India from 1989 to 2013. He is the only player to have scored 100 international centuries, with 51 in Tests and 49 in ODIs. He also holds the record for the most runs in both formats, amassing 15,921 runs in Tests and 18,426 runs in ODIs.
