Sachin Tendulkar Advises Caution for Young Cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi
Sachin's Insight on Young Talent
Renowned former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, often referred to as the God of Cricket, has shared valuable advice regarding the emerging talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He believes that assigning significant responsibilities such as captaincy or vice-captaincy at such a young age may not be appropriate. Instead, Tendulkar emphasizes the importance of allowing this promising player to refine his skills gradually without rushing into leadership roles. Recently, when Suryavanshi was appointed as the vice-captain of the East Zone team for the Duleep Trophy, Sachin expressed that this decision seemed premature. He stressed that the young cricketer should first gain ample experience in red-ball cricket to secure a strong future.
During a live Ask-Me-Anything session on Reddit on November 3, Tendulkar revealed these insights. Notably, just a few months ago, Suryavanshi made headlines by becoming the youngest player to debut in international cricket for India. He achieved this milestone at the age of just 15 years and 99 days, while Sachin himself began his Test career against Pakistan in Karachi on November 15, 1989, at the age of 16 years and 205 days.
Hailing from Bihar, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has quickly captured the attention of the global cricket community with his aggressive and impressive batting style. His consistent performances have earned him a spot in the national T20 team, although he has been waiting for opportunities in the playing XI due to a lack of vacancies in the top order. This situation has led to criticism directed at the head coach and captain Shreyas Iyer, as the management has made it clear that Suryavanshi must wait for his turn since the opening slots are currently filled.
Despite not regularly featuring in the final eleven, Suryavanshi is regarded as a bright prospect for Indian cricket and an emerging star. The team management continues to include him in the squad to prepare him for future challenges, giving him chances when possible. So far, he has played 10 T20 international matches, scoring 295 runs at an average of 30, including two half-centuries, with a top score of 81. Additionally, he has participated in 11 first-class matches and 13 List A games. He has also been selected for the upcoming Doha 'Rising Star Asia Cup 2026', where he will be part of the India 'A' team, captained by Tilak Varma.
During the same Reddit chat, when asked about his favorite foreign batsmen, Tendulkar specifically mentioned England's Harry Brook, the experienced Joe Root, and Australia's star Steve Smith. He praised Joe Root for his impressive Test record and the respect Root has shown towards him. Tendulkar expressed that he has always considered Root a top-class batsman and recognized his potential for greatness from the very first Test match he played.
