Nuclear Cooperation Between Iran and Russia

Tehran, June 10: The head of Iran's atomic energy agency has revealed that Russia will be constructing eight nuclear power plants in Iran, following a contract previously established between the two nations, according to the official news agency IRNA.

During a visit from members of the Iranian parliament's national security and foreign policy committee to the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) headquarters in Tehran, Mohammad Eslami, the AEOI president, made this announcement on Monday, as reported by Xinhua.

Eslami noted that four of the eight nuclear reactors are set to be built in Bushehr province, located in southern Iran.

He also provided updates to lawmakers regarding the ongoing construction of units 2 and 3 at the existing Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, highlighting that these units are being developed by Iranian firms.

After the parliamentary delegation's visit, Eslami mentioned that the AEOI aims to triple Iran's nuclear power generation capacity as part of a comprehensive energy development strategy.

The Bushehr plant, which was completed by Russia in May 2011, is Iran's first and only operational nuclear power facility. It has played a crucial role in the nation's civilian nuclear energy program and has long been associated with collaboration with Russia's state nuclear agency, Rosatom.
