RSS Chief Challenges Historical Narratives at Maharana Pratap Jayanti Celebration
Mohan Bhagwat's Remarks on Historical Narratives
During a recent event commemorating the 486th birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap in Udaipur, Mohan Bhagwat, the leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), contested widely accepted historical accounts. He asserted that the Rajput king achieved a clear victory in the Battle of Haldighati. Bhagwat criticized the prevalent narratives in Indian history, claiming that invaders have been glorified over the original rulers of the land. He emphasized that the victory in the battle belonged to Maharana Pratap and those who fought for India, stating that the historical debate has been one-sided, yet facts contradict this narrative.
Revisiting the Battle of Haldighati
Addressing the common belief that the 1576 battle marked a strategic win for the Mughal Empire under Akbar, Bhagwat referenced statements from Mughal historians. He pointed out that these historians acknowledged that their forces had to retreat several miles after the initial attack. He questioned, 'If we consider the accounts written by Mughal historians, they indicate that they had to abandon their position after the first assault and retreat six to seven miles. So, who truly won?' He noted that even during that era, some historians fabricated incorrect narratives.
Connecting Maharana Pratap's Legacy to Today
Linking Maharana Pratap's legacy to contemporary times, Bhagwat remarked that today marks his birth anniversary, and tomorrow will mark 450 years since the battle. He questioned why the Battle of Haldighati is regarded as a victory, attributing it to Maharana Pratap's birth, which continues to influence outcomes today. He stressed the importance of understanding this connection. Discussing the impact of Indian civilization on the world, he highlighted that India's historical influence spread through service and knowledge rather than mere conquest.
Philosophy of Service and Knowledge
Bhagwat expressed that he believes every individual’s chosen path is valid, depending on their feelings and perceptions of God or auspicious timing. This belief has led to welcoming, nurturing, and sharing knowledge with everyone. He further elaborated that while India has engaged with foreign lands, it did not do so with military might. Instead, India brought essential knowledge, medical expertise, education, and culture for the purpose of service. He stated that friendships were formed based on these exchanges, allowing India to share its virtues with the world.
