Referee Training Programme Underway

The Royal Enfield Ice Hockey Season 3 is currently hosting a Referee Training Programme at ISKATE by Roseate, which marks the second capacity-building initiative for the 2025-26 season. Running from December 1 to 5, this event gathers over 20 officials from regions including Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, emphasizing Royal Enfield's commitment to bolstering the technical framework of Ice Hockey in the Himalayan area.

Preparation for On-Ice Training

Before engaging in on-ice sessions in New Delhi, the participating officials completed four virtual modules as part of a comprehensive Referee Development Programme. These online courses introduced essential officiating principles, ensuring that all referees commenced their on-ice training with a unified understanding of rules, mechanics, and decision-making in various situations.

Leadership and Expertise

The training is spearheaded by Peter Gebei, a highly experienced Ice Hockey professional from Hungary, who boasts over 40 years in roles as a player, referee, and officiating coach. With 57 international caps for the Hungarian national team, Peter transitioned to officiating after his playing days and has officiated in prestigious leagues such as the Austrian Hockey League and the Kontinental Hockey League. His selection for the International Ice Hockey Federation's Top Division World Championships underscores his technical proficiency and reliability at elite levels. Currently, he continues to officiate at global IIHF competitions.

Mentorship and Global Standards

In addition to officiating, Peter has significantly contributed to the development of emerging referees worldwide as an IIHF Officiating Instructor. He has been instrumental in creating structured educational pathways and fostering robust officiating ecosystems on a global scale. His leadership brings international standards and expertise directly to the Indian context.

Programme Goals and Structure

The Referee Training Programme aligns with the Blueprint for Himalayan Ice Hockey Development, aiming to enhance governance and officiating standards necessary for the sport's advancement in developing areas. This week-long training includes classroom instruction, on-ice demonstrations, and scenario-based assessments to cultivate a technically proficient group of officials capable of supporting developmental competitions and community-led events.

Impact on Regional Development

Upon completing the programme in New Delhi, the trained officials will head to Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh to assist with Learn to Play initiatives and officiate at early-season regional camps. They will form the core officiating team for upcoming developmental leagues in early 2026, including the Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League in Ladakh and the Spiti Cup in Himachal Pradesh.

Empowering Communities Through Sports

Through these structured initiatives, Royal Enfield is dedicated to its Social Mission of empowering Himalayan communities via sports. This includes enhancing technical standards, creating opportunities for youth and women, and establishing a resilient and credible winter sports ecosystem throughout the region.
