Indian javelin thrower Rohit Yadav is feeling optimistic as he prepares for the Asian Games 2026. He, along with Yashvir Singh, is set to take on the significant responsibility of succeeding the legendary Neeraj Chopra, who had to cut his 2026 season short due to an injury. Rohit expressed his ambitions during a press conference at the Indian Athletics Series Final, where he achieved a top throw of 81.10 meters.

No Pressure to Perform

When discussing the challenge of stepping into Neeraj's shoes, Rohit stated, "I feel no pressure. I will compete freely. There is always pressure in major competitions. We consistently aim for medals in javelin throw, especially when Neeraj is competing. We will also strive to secure a medal for India."

Reflecting on Previous Competitions

Rohit, who placed seventh in the men's javelin final at the Commonwealth Games 2026 with a throw of 81.56 meters, admitted he struggled to find his rhythm during the event. He remarked, "I was performing well leading up to the CWG, but my rhythm was off during the competition, which affected my performance. I am focused on improving in future events. My training has been solid, but the cold weather was a new challenge for me, and the runway conditions were not ideal."

Trial Competition Insights

He described the recent competition in New Delhi as a valuable trial, stating, "It allows you to assess your weaknesses and identify areas for improvement. Training cannot replicate the intensity of competition. I was pleased to achieve four throws over 80 meters today. With more effort, I believe I can improve my performance further."

Setting Goals for the Asian Games

Looking ahead to the Asian Games, Rohit, who recorded a personal best of 87.68 meters in August at Bhubaneswar, expressed his goal to either match or exceed that mark. "My aim is to replicate my previous success. I am not focusing on anything beyond that," he stated.

Neeraj Chopra's Impact on Javelin Throwing

Rohit acknowledged the influence of Neeraj Chopra on the rise of javelin throwers in India and Asia following his success at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He mentioned athletes like Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage, Pakistan's Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, and India's Sachin Yadav, saying, "Neeraj has elevated the standards of Indian javelin throw. His achievements in global competitions, including the Olympics and World Championships, inspire us all."
