Spain's captain Rodri expressed that his remarkable journey from the pinnacle of football to the depths of a severe knee injury, and back to triumph, should motivate young athletes. This reflection came after La Roja's 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra time, securing the FIFA World Cup 2026 title on Sunday.
Having been named Player of the Tournament following an impressive campaign, the 30-year-old looked back on his extraordinary recovery, which occurred less than two years after he tore his knee ligaments. "It feels like a perfect story. I certainly didn't foresee this," Rodri stated after being awarded FIFA's Golden Ball. "I hope younger generations see that a player can rise from the heights, fall to the depths, and return. It's a lesson in resilience," he added.
A Rare Collection of Honours
With this victory, Rodri achieved one of football's most exclusive accolades, becoming only the fourth player in history, alongside legends like Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller, and Zinedine Zidane, to win the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship, UEFA Champions League, and the Ballon d'Or.
The Manchester City midfielder entered the tournament seeking the form that earned him the 2024 Ballon d'Or after leading Spain to Euro 2024 victory and guiding City through a record 74-match unbeaten streak. His performance improved throughout the World Cup, culminating in a pivotal role during the final.
