A recent rockfall in the Lahaul area of Himachal Pradesh has once again brought to light the dangers that tourists face when navigating mountainous regions, especially those unfamiliar with the terrain.

The event took place around 1:20 PM in the Mosuma Thetup Kurkur (Mahal Bok) locality within the Patwar Circle Kolong. Rocks unexpectedly fell from a steep incline, hitting a taxi in motion. The vehicle was damaged, and two tourists, Manojit Singh Roy and his spouse Paulini Singha, sustained minor injuries. Fortunately, the driver, Deepak Tamang, was unharmed.

The injured couple was quickly transported to the Regional Hospital in Keylong, where medical staff confirmed they are out of danger. This incident serves as a crucial reminder that even seemingly routine travel in hilly areas can become perilous.

Experts and local officials note that such occurrences are frequent in high-altitude regions like Lahaul, where unstable geology, steep inclines, and unpredictable weather conditions heighten the risk of landslides and falling debris. The narrow roads carved into the mountains further exacerbate these dangers, leaving little room for error.

As the tourist season begins, authorities are urging visitors to remain vigilant. Travelers are advised to avoid stopping in areas prone to landslides, follow local guidelines closely, and schedule their journeys during daylight hours. Speeding, unnecessary stops, and neglecting warning signs can significantly increase the risk in these regions.

The District Disaster Management Authority has emphasized that awareness and responsible travel practices are essential for preventing accidents.
