Robert Vadra Interrogated by ED in Money Laundering Case Linked to Arms Consultant

Robert Vadra, the husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate for questioning in a money laundering case associated with arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari. This inquiry is part of a broader investigation into multiple money laundering cases, including alleged irregularities in land deals. Bhandari, who fled to London after a raid in 2016, has been declared a fugitive by a Delhi court. The ED's charge sheet claims that Vadra provided funds for a property renovation in London, which he denies. This situation raises significant legal questions regarding international extradition and financial misconduct.

Robert Vadra Faces ED Inquiry

On Monday, Robert Vadra, the businessman husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning related to a money laundering case involving UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari. Official sources confirmed this development. It was noted that Vadra's statement would be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The 56-year-old businessman had been summoned by the agency last month to testify but requested a postponement due to international travel commitments.

The central investigative agency is probing Vadra in three separate money laundering cases, including this one. The other two cases pertain to alleged irregularities in land transactions. Bhandari, aged 63, fled to London shortly after a raid by the Income Tax Department in Delhi in 2016. Recently, a Delhi court declared him a fugitive economic offender. Last month, a UK court rejected the Indian government's plea to allow an appeal against Bhandari's acquittal in the extradition case in the UK Supreme Court.

This ruling significantly diminishes the chances of bringing him back to face the law in India. In 2023, the ED filed a charge sheet in this case, alleging that Bhandari acquired a property at 12, Bryanston Square in London in 2009 and renovated it under Vadra's instructions, with funds provided by Robert Vadra. The businessman has denied having any direct or indirect ownership of property in London.
