Nagaon, April 24: A shocking robbery and assault occurred in Morikolong, Assam, leaving a doctor and his spouse critically injured. The attack, carried out by unidentified individuals in the early hours of Thursday, has sparked significant concern regarding public safety.
Details of the Attack
The incident took place at the home of Ranjit Saikia, where a group of intruders reportedly broke in under the cover of night, stealing valuables and violently assaulting the couple.
Both Ranjit and his wife suffered serious injuries and were initially treated in Nagaon before being transferred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for further medical attention.
Nature of the Assault
Initial investigations suggest that the assailants used a blunt object, believed to be an iron rod found at the scene, during the attack. The victims are currently in critical condition.
Witness Accounts
A tenant residing in the same building reported hearing strange noises but was unable to act immediately due to his locked room. “I heard some noise late at night, but my room was locked from inside. When the police arrived and we entered the house, we saw the woman lying on the bed, badly injured. There was a rod in the room, and it appeared they had both been attacked brutally,” he recounted.
Community Reaction
A neighbor described the scene as chaotic and alarming. “We were asleep and unaware of what had happened. Suddenly, Saikia came running to our house asking for help. He said they had been attacked and that his wife was gravely hurt. When we reached the house, there was blood everywhere, and the room was completely ransacked. She was barely breathing. He pleaded to be taken to the hospital and said he would explain everything once he recovers. We were told around six to seven attackers were involved,” the neighbor said.
Public Concerns
Local residents have voiced their anger and fear regarding the incident, citing a perceived breakdown in law and order. One resident pointed out that this was not an isolated incident, noting, “This is extremely worrying, especially since the house is located near a main road. Within just a month, this is the second burglary reported at the same residence. Authorities need to take this seriously.”
Police Investigation
Police from the Morikolong outpost arrived shortly after being notified and initiated an investigation. Nagaon Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das also visited the site to evaluate the situation.
Officials have stated that while some evidence has been gathered, including the suspected weapon, the precise details of the incident and the motive behind the attack will only be determined after a thorough investigation. Currently, no arrests have been made.
