Khanna's Presidential Aspirations

Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna, of Indian descent, expressed on Friday that he is "seriously considering" a bid for the presidency in 2028. He emphasized that his recent trip to the occupied West Bank and his advocacy for Palestinian rights would play a crucial role in his campaign. Khanna made these statements following his visit to a Palestinian village in the Israeli-occupied territory, where he reported being detained for approximately 90 minutes by armed Israeli settlers.

In an interview with a news outlet, Khanna stated, "I have a unique perspective on the injustices faced by Palestinians. Regardless of my decision to run, I will travel across America to share their stories and highlight the situation in the West Bank." Earlier, he described his encounter with the settlers as "deeply frightening," noting that they blocked his vehicle with US-made M4 rifles, while the Israeli military sided with the settlers instead of assisting him. He remarked, "Consider how Palestinians feel daily under occupation, if they can render an American congressperson powerless for 90 minutes."

Khanna's remarks highlight an ongoing discussion within the Democratic Party regarding US relations with Israel and the Palestinian territories, especially in light of the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the ensuing conflict in Gaza. While support for Israel has traditionally been a staple of US presidential campaigns, an increasing number of progressive Democrats have criticized Israel's military actions in Gaza and the West Bank, including the violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers. Some have even called for the suspension of US military aid to Israel.

According to a news report, Khanna's visit to the West Bank underscores how US policy towards Israel and the Palestinians could emerge as a pivotal issue in the 2028 Democratic primary. Previously, Khanna hinted at his presidential ambitions during a discussion with civil rights leader Al Sharpton, outlining a vision focused on economic opportunity and a multiracial democracy.

Khanna articulated his reasons for considering a presidential run, stating, "I believe I offer two key elements for America. First, I represent the economic future, with a clear plan to ensure every region has a stake in that future, whether through worker equity, integrating the Black South into the AI revolution, or guaranteeing families achieve economic independence through healthcare and childcare." He continued, "America is evolving into a composite nation, a melting pot of diverse backgrounds. I see this energy among our youth, and I believe a multiracial America will be just not only here but globally as well." Should he enter the race, Khanna is likely to encounter competition from other notable Democrats. Polls from 2026 indicate that former Vice President Kamala Harris is leading many Democratic primary surveys, with California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also gaining traction.
