Golaghat, July 24: The Doyang Hydroelectric Project reservoir in Nagaland is experiencing a significant rise in water levels, which is raising alarms about potential flooding in the adjacent regions of Assam.
Recent official measurements indicate that the water level surged from 322.99 meters at 8 AM to 323.16 meters by 1:30 PM on Friday.
In light of this situation, authorities have opted to further open all four spillway gates, currently releasing approximately 209 cubic meters of water per second.
Additionally, several rivers in the Golaghat and Bokakhat subdivisions have already exceeded their danger thresholds.
The Dhansiri River at Numaligarh has reached 78.99 meters, surpassing its danger level of 78.42 meters, while the Kakodonga River at Difluting has risen to 88.19 meters, exceeding its danger mark of 87.50 meters.
As the water level at the Doyang reservoir continues to climb, officials have cautioned that the discharge rate may be increased further, potentially exacerbating the flood situation in low-lying and downstream areas. Residents near riverbanks are advised to stay vigilant and take appropriate safety measures.
Upper Assam is currently facing severe flooding, with reports indicating 47 fatalities and numerous individuals still unaccounted for.
In response to the escalating crisis, Union Home Minister Amit Shah communicated with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, assuring him that an Inter-Ministerial Central Team would be dispatched to Assam shortly to evaluate the damage and discuss the Centre's support for relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts.
