Severe Heat Wave Hits Delhi-NCR

The onset of extreme heat in Delhi-NCR has begun to cause significant discomfort for residents. The rising temperatures have made outdoor work increasingly challenging, particularly during the busy afternoon hours. Amidst this sweltering heat, gig and platform workers are facing heightened anxiety as they continue to work on the streets despite the risks involved. According to forecasts from the Indian Meteorological Department, temperatures may exceed 44 degrees Celsius in the coming days, potentially exacerbating the situation.

Union Calls for Action Amidst Rising Heat

The Gig and Platform Service Workers Union (GPSWU) has reached out to the Delhi government, highlighting that current temperatures are already hovering between 40°C and 42°C. The humidity makes the actual conditions even more severe, worsening the plight of those working outdoors. The union reports that delivery partners, cab drivers, and other app-based workers are compelled to remain on the streets for extended periods without adequate rest or safety measures. This situation significantly increases the risks of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke, which can be fatal.

Urgent Requests for Worker Safety

In response to these alarming conditions, the union has urged the government to suspend the work of gig workers between 12 PM and 3 PM, the hottest part of the day. They argue that continuing work during these hours poses a serious health risk. The letter also calls for the establishment of shaded rest areas throughout the city, along with the provision of drinking water and emergency medical services. Furthermore, the union emphasized the need for the swift implementation of budget provisions announced for rest facilities and the Atal Canteen to provide immediate relief.
