Rising Hockey Star Akshra Dutta Shines in National Camp
A Promising Talent from Jammu and Kashmir
Akshra Dutta, a 16-year-old athlete from Poonch, a remote area in Jammu and Kashmir located merely 8 kilometers from the Line of Control, has secured a spot in Hockey India's current U-18 National Coaching Camp at the SAI facility in Bhopal.
Impressive Performance at National Championship
Her selection comes after an outstanding performance at the 16th Hockey India Sub Junior Women National Championship 2026 Division 'C'. Representing Hockey Jammu and Kashmir, Akshra netted four field goals, making her the second-highest scorer in her division. Her efforts were instrumental in her team's success, allowing them to top Pool B and gain promotion to Division 'B' for the upcoming season.
Supportive Family and Overcoming Challenges
Akshra's journey is supported by a strong sporting culture at home. Her father, Santosh Kumar Dutta, a professional gymnast, introduced her to sports and remains her greatest supporter. Her mother is a government school teacher, her grandfather served in the army, and her sisters are also engaged in sports, fostering an environment of discipline and ambition.
Reflecting on her beginnings, Akshra shared, "At around seven, my father took me to the field and asked which sport I wanted to pursue. I chose hockey, and I've been dedicated to it ever since. My father's unwavering support has been my motivation."
Despite facing skepticism about pursuing sports in her community, Akshra persevered. "Initially, people thought sports were a waste of time, but my parents always believed in me. Their encouragement gave me the confidence to strive for my dream of representing India," she explained. "My first experience at the Hockey India Sub Junior Women National Championship in 2022 in Manipur was pivotal, as it instilled in me the belief that I could pursue hockey professionally."
Inspired by a National Icon
As a forward, Akshra looks up to former Indian player Vandana Katariya. She recalled, "I watched a match with my father where India faced Argentina, and my father encouraged me to learn from Vandana's skills. Since then, I've followed her closely and worked on my game, aspiring to score for my country like she did."
Valuable Lessons from the Camp
Discussing her experience at the camp, Akshra stated, "Training under coach Rani has been enlightening. I learned the importance of enjoying the game. Rani ma'am has instilled discipline and confidence in me, but most importantly, she has taught me to enjoy hockey and play freely."
