Rising Heart Disease Risk Among Younger Adults: Expert Insights
Increasing Heart Disease Concerns
New Delhi: Heart disease is no longer an issue confined to the elderly. Factors such as changing lifestyles, stress, poor dietary habits, smoking, diabetes, and hypertension are increasingly putting younger individuals at risk for heart-related illnesses. Experts emphasize that timely heart check-ups can help detect serious conditions in their early stages, allowing for prompt treatment.
According to medical professionals, individuals without a family history of heart disease and who are otherwise healthy should begin regular monitoring of blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and body mass index (BMI) starting at ages 20 to 30. After reaching 40, incorporating regular health check-ups, including heart assessments, into one’s routine is advisable.
Experts indicate that those with a family history of early heart attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart conditions, as well as individuals who smoke, are obese, or experience chronic stress, may need to undergo heart check-ups more frequently than the general population.
For heart evaluations, doctors recommend various tests based on the patient's age, symptoms, and risk factors. These may include ECG, echocardiography, treadmill tests (TMT), lipid profiles, blood sugar, blood pressure monitoring, and, if necessary, CT coronary angiography or other advanced tests. Not every test is essential for everyone, so it is crucial to follow a doctor's advice regarding which tests to undergo.
Experts warn that symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, excessive fatigue, dizziness, or unusual discomfort during exercise should not be ignored. Immediate consultation with a doctor for appropriate testing is recommended if these symptoms arise.
Doctors also advise that regular exercise, a balanced diet, avoiding smoking and tobacco, getting adequate sleep, managing stress, and periodic health check-ups can significantly reduce the risk of heart diseases. According to specialists, raising awareness about heart check-ups can play a vital role in preventing serious health issues in the future.
Note: This information is intended for general health awareness. Any decisions regarding tests or treatments should be made based on individual age, health status, and risk factors, in consultation with a qualified doctor.
