Cybercrime on the Rise in Assam

Guwahati, Dec 3: Cybercrime has rapidly become one of the most pressing security issues in Assam, with more than 18,315 individuals apprehended for various digital offenses since 2014.

Data from official sources indicates that this increase encompasses a wide array of crimes, including ATM fraud, KYC scams, identity theft, distribution of obscene materials, child pornography, and the use of fake SIM cards, as well as forged Aadhaar, PAN, and voter identification documents.

Recognizing the steady rise in cyber offenses, authorities have identified it as a critical area of focus for law enforcement in the state.

To combat this trend, multiple intervention strategies have been implemented. The national cybercrime helpline, 1930, has been established to enable citizens to report digital fraud swiftly.

The National Cyber Security Policy has been adopted nationwide, including in Assam, to enhance the framework for detecting, responding to, and preventing cybercrime. Additionally, the creation of the National Cyber Crime Coordination Centre has improved the efficiency of cross-state investigations into online offenses.

The government has also bolstered CERT-In (Computer Emergency Response Team – India) to address cyber incidents affecting both organizations and individuals.

In conjunction with structural reforms, the state has initiated extensive awareness campaigns targeting students, youth groups, and community organizations. These initiatives aim to promote safe online practices, recognize phishing attempts, safeguard personal information, and understand digital footprints.

While cybercrime has gained prominence, traditional criminal activities continue to present challenges. Recent statistics from the Home Department reveal that theft remains one of the most prevalent crimes in the state.

In 2024, Assam reported 7,634 theft incidents, with 5,251 cases recorded by November 2025. Conversely, murder cases have shown a downward trend over the past decade, decreasing from 1,451 in 2014 to 926 in 2024, and further down to 732 by November 2025. Abduction cases, which peaked at 7,580 in 2021, fell to 3,381 in 2024 and 2,567 by November this year.

Although dowry-related crimes and witch-hunting incidents are less frequent compared to other offenses, they still persist.

Dowry cases dropped from 188 in 2014 to 94 in 2024, while witch-hunting incidents fluctuated between 5 and 16 over the years. Loot and dacoity have shown varied trends, with both crimes experiencing significant declines in recent times.

Furthermore, from 2014 to November 19, 2025, a total of 7,765 arrests were made concerning child marriage offenses.

"The increase in cyber offenses represents a new challenge for law enforcement. The government's efforts are focused on enhancing cybersecurity infrastructure through technological advancements and public engagement to effectively address online crime," sources stated.
