Congress Leaders Address Bus Safety Concerns

This morning, Rahul Gandhi, a Congress MP and leader of the opposition, along with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, met with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to discuss the challenges faced by the bus and truck body manufacturers' association due to existing ministry regulations. This meeting comes in light of the increasing incidents of passenger buses catching fire across the country.

In recent months, several states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, have reported multiple incidents where buses were engulfed in flames within minutes.

The primary causes of these fires are often attributed to poor wiring, the use of substandard materials, or unsafe repair practices. In some instances, a lack of adequate emergency exits and highly flammable interior structures have exacerbated the loss of life and property, prompting a thorough review of bus safety standards.

In response, the government has decided to implement stricter regulations on bus body construction, mandating adherence to approved design codes and the use of fire-resistant materials.

However, smaller manufacturers argue that these new regulations disproportionately benefit larger, organized players who have the capital and infrastructure to comply, while pushing smaller workshops to the brink of closure. Industry representatives had previously reached out to Rahul Gandhi, leading to the arrangement of this meeting with Gadkari. Following the discussions, Priyanka Gandhi remarked that the licensing process was costly and time-consuming, and she noted that Gadkari assured them that the issues would be addressed promptly.
