Rishi Dhawan Predicts Shubman Gill's Leadership for 2027 ODI World Cup
Rishi Dhawan's Support for Shubman Gill
Former Indian fast bowler Rishi Dhawan has expressed confidence in Shubman Gill's potential to emerge as a formidable leader, envisioning him as India's captain for the 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup. Dhawan also hopes to see seasoned players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli participating in this prestigious tournament.
Gill's Captaincy Journey So Far
Shubman Gill took over as India's Test captain in May 2025 following Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket, and he was appointed ODI captain in October 2025. To date, Gill has led India in 15 ODIs and 11 Tests. Under his captaincy in ODIs, the team has achieved eight victories and suffered seven defeats, with notable series wins against Afghanistan and the West Indies. A highlight of his ODI captaincy was his remarkable innings of 223 not out off 133 balls during the second ODI against the West Indies in Guwahati, which contributed to India's record chase of 406 runs. In Test matches, Gill has secured six wins, three losses, and two draws, including a hard-fought 2-2 series draw against England in 2025 and a home series victory over the West Indies. His highest score as Test captain stands at 269, achieved against England in the second Test last year.
Dhawan Praises Gill's Captaincy Skills
In a recent interview, Dhawan praised Gill for managing the dual roles of captaincy and batting effectively. He stated, "Yes, definitely. In every series he has captained, he has performed admirably. Typically, taking on captaincy can affect a player's batting, but he has balanced both roles exceptionally well, consistently delivering outstanding performances." Dhawan believes that Gill has demonstrated significant growth as a leader and will be well-prepared to lead India in the 2027 World Cup. He added, "By 2027, he will certainly captain very well in the World Cup. With Rohit and Virat providing support and guidance, I foresee no issues at all."
The Role of Rohit and Kohli in 2027
Dhawan also endorsed the idea of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remaining integral to India's ODI squad, citing their fitness, current form, and extensive experience as crucial assets leading up to the 2027 World Cup. He remarked, "Absolutely, they should continue. Considering their fitness and performance for the Indian team, along with their immense experience, they should definitely play and help us secure the World Cup."
