Rishabh Pant's Journey: Embracing Change Ahead of IPL 2026
Rishabh Pant's Expectations for IPL 2026
As the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants, Rishabh Pant enters the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 with high hopes, both as a player and a leader. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra expressed his satisfaction that Pant recognizes the need for adjustments in his game as the 19th season approaches.
Chopra Discusses Pant's Evolving Mindset
In a conversation on JioStar, Chopra emphasized Pant's unique perspective on the game. He noted, "Many of us may not fully grasp what Rishabh Pant contributes and how he perceives the game. During his time in Test cricket, he engaged in discussions with Rahul Dravid, who was not entirely pleased with Pant's batting style. However, it's commendable that Pant acknowledges the need for change in his approach. He is aware that something isn't working and is actively seeking a strategy to improve. His outreach to Yuvraj Singh for guidance indicates his willingness to learn and adapt, which is a positive sign. Given his immense talent, it's unfortunate that he hasn't excelled in white-ball cricket yet," Chopra remarked.
A New Era with Lucknow Super Giants
Pant has been training with former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh in preparation for the upcoming IPL season. He holds the record for the highest purchase in IPL history, valued at Rs 27 Crore, after being acquired by the Lucknow Super Giants before IPL 2025. This season, he will also take on the role of captain for LSG.
Addressing Scrutiny and National Team Aspirations
Chopra addressed the scrutiny surrounding Pant, stating, "The criticism directed at Rishabh Pant is warranted. He has become a victim of his own reputation for playing unconventional shots and often neglects to build his innings when necessary. Last season, despite having chances to stabilize his form, he continued to take risks, which led to backlash."
"Having been part of India's T20 World Cup-winning team in Barbados, he has now fallen out of favor for the national squad. The selectors have shifted from considering him as a middle-order wicketkeeper to exploring options for an opener or a keeper who can bat at three. While the IPL is significant, representing India is the ultimate goal, and losing his spot means it's time for him to reassess his approach," Chopra concluded.
