Rishabh Pant's Fitness Status

Hamilton [New Zealand], November 1: Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, stated on Sunday that he currently lacks information regarding the fitness of wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant for the upcoming two-match Test series against New Zealand. Pant suffered an injury while leading India in the Irani Cup, reportedly feeling discomfort while executing a sweep shot during the first innings. Despite this setback, he returned to bat at No. 8 in the second innings but was also battling flu symptoms and did not keep wickets during Jammu and Kashmir's chase. He is now recovering under the care of the BCCI medical team. Although he has resumed skill training, the management is cautious about his fitness. His timeline for returning to play will become clearer after he completes three to four skill sessions, with his progress in these sessions determining when he can return to competitive cricket. When asked about Pant's availability during the post-match press conference following India's 3-2 T20I series victory, Gambhir remarked, 'At the moment, I have no information, and once I receive it, we will share it with you.'

Insights on the T20I Series

Reflecting on India's 3-2 T20I series win against New Zealand, Gambhir noted that the tour posed significant challenges for the T20I squad, highlighting the limited preparation time available before the series. He mentioned that around 70 to 80 percent of the players were visiting New Zealand for the first time. 'It's huge. We discussed in the dressing room that this tour was the toughest for the T20 side. The Test team and ODI players have time to prepare, but these boys had none,' Gambhir stated.

He emphasized the demanding travel and weather conditions, praising the players for their strong performance despite having only one practice session following a 15-hour flight. 'The weather conditions between where we came from and here are completely different. After just one practice session and a 15-hour flight, delivering that performance against a quality side deserves immense credit. Many people won't talk about it, but it's an achievement worth highlighting because these boys played under intense pressure without adequate preparation. They deserve tremendous credit,' he added.

Looking Forward to the ODI Series

As the focus shifts to the upcoming ODI series, Gambhir acknowledged that India would be fielding a relatively inexperienced bowling attack, especially in the fast-bowling department. The three-match ODI series is set to commence on November 4. He pointed out that Auqib Nabi and Anshul Kamboj have each played only one ODI, while Gurnoor has participated in around 10 to 12 matches. Arshdeep Singh is the only fast bowler in the group with significant experience. 'For me, winning every series is important, not just in New Zealand. It is challenging because this might be one of our most inexperienced ODI bowling attacks: Auqib Nabi has 1 match, Anshul Kamboj has 1 match, Gurnoor has 10–12 matches, and only Arshdeep has substantial experience among fast bowlers,' Gambhir explained.

He stressed the importance of the bowling unit in determining India's success in the upcoming overseas ODI series, noting that bowlers often play a crucial role in winning matches and series outside home conditions. 'We have plenty of experience in batting, but when playing overseas, bowlers win you series in ODIs and Tests. If we do well, the credit belongs to the bowlers rather than focusing solely on the batters,' he stated.

Summary of the Fifth T20I Match

In the fifth T20I, New Zealand triumphed over India by seven wickets at Seddon Park, Hamilton, successfully chasing down a target of 192 in 17.4 overs for a consolation victory, while India secured the five-match series 3-2. Tim Seifert led the chase with an impressive 93 runs off 50 balls, including 11 fours and five sixes, while Glenn Phillips remained not out on 65 off 38 deliveries, hitting eight fours and three sixes. The duo added 86 runs for the third wicket, putting New Zealand in a strong position. Phillips also achieved his fourth half-century of the series, joining Mohammad Rizwan and S. Ravichandran in the list of batters with four or more 50-plus scores in a bilateral T20I series.

Earlier, India bounced back from an early setback at 19/2, thanks to a dynamic 93-run partnership between Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer. Kishan scored 61 off 31 balls, while Iyer contributed 50 off 23 deliveries. Naman Dhir added 33 off 23 balls, and Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with 22 off 17 balls, leading India to a total of 191/8 in 20 overs. New Zealand's Adam Milne was the standout bowler, claiming four wickets for 19 runs, while Blair Tickner and Nathan Smith also took wickets. Despite the loss in the final match, India clinched the series 3-2.
