Rishabh Pant Returns to Delhi Capitals in Major IPL Trade Deal
Rishabh Pant's Trade to Delhi Capitals
After two challenging seasons with the Lucknow Super Giants, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has officially rejoined the Delhi Capitals through a significant trade deal involving Kuldeep Yadav, finalized on June 23.
Following weeks of speculation, the trade was confirmed, with Pant and Kuldeep switching teams ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Pant accepted a substantial pay cut, reducing his salary from INR 27 crore to INR 15 crore, while Kuldeep Yadav moved to LSG for INR 13.5 crore.

The trade discussions had been ongoing between the two franchises before receiving the necessary approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), paving the way for this high-profile move.
The total financial implications of this trade amount to an impressive INR 28.5 crore in player values, along with an additional INR 13.75 crore that the Delhi Capitals will reportedly pay to LSG to balance the trade's overall valuation. This brings the total to INR 42.25 crore, marking it as one of the most significant trades in IPL history.
Sanjiv Goenka's Ambitious Plans for LSG
With Pant's return to the Delhi Capitals, where he began his IPL journey, Lucknow Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka's ambitious plans for the franchise have faced a setback.
After acquiring Pant for INR 27 crore, making him the most expensive player in IPL history, Goenka had envisioned a long-term strategy centered around the wicketkeeper-batter.
In a previous interview, he expressed hopes of establishing a dynasty that could dominate the league for over a decade, placing Pant alongside legendary captains like MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.
"He will play for 12–15 years. This is a journey of how we will win 5 IPL titles in 15 years, maybe even 6 titles. People right now talk about Mumbai and Chennai as the most successful teams, and say Mahi and Rohit are brilliant, undeniably brilliant. But mark my words, in 10 years they will say: Mahi, Rohit, Rishabh," Goenka stated.
Challenges Faced by Rishabh Pant at LSG
Rishabh Pant's tenure with Lucknow Super Giants was marked by difficulties, both as a captain and in terms of his batting performance, which did not meet expectations given his hefty price tag. Under his leadership, the team secured only 10 wins out of 28 matches, resulting in a win percentage of 35.71%.
In terms of batting, Pant scored 581 runs, including one century and two fifties, with an average of 26.40 and a strike rate of 135.74, which fell short of justifying his INR 27 crore salary. Following another disappointing season, the LSG management hinted at a leadership change, prompting Pant to step down.
His departure was not solely due to on-field performance; growing tensions behind the scenes also played a role. Reports indicated that Goenka's involvement in team matters and public scrutiny created a challenging atmosphere.
Goenka's frequent meetings with players and discussions with the coaching staff and Pant after matches became a focal point, highlighting the pressure within the team. Internal conflicts reportedly made Pant's continuation with LSG untenable, although both parties maintained a respectful silence regarding their issues.
Future Leadership of Lucknow Super Giants
With Pant's exit, Lucknow Super Giants face a significant gap in leadership and batting. While they have acquired Kuldeep Yadav for INR 13.5 crore to strengthen their spin department, a new captain has yet to be officially named for the IPL 2027 season.
Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram are seen as potential candidates for the captaincy, given their extensive experience in international and T20 formats. Nicholas Pooran may also be considered for the role due to his familiarity with the LSG setup.
Initially, Pant was viewed as a long-term captain for LSG, but his tenure ended after two tumultuous seasons. With Goenka's long-term vision for the franchise, the management is likely to focus on building a stable core rather than relying on a single high-priced player. Although they have three captaincy options, they may look to the upcoming mini IPL auction to find a dynamic leader who can guide the franchise for years to come.
