Rima Das's Upcoming Film at Berlinale

Guwahati, Jan 15: Acclaimed Assamese filmmaker Rima Das is gearing up for her return to the renowned Berlin International Film Festival, commonly referred to as Berlinale, with her latest feature titled 'Not a Hero.'

This film is set to have its world premiere during the festival's 76th edition in 2026 and has been chosen for the Generation Kplus Competition, marking Das's third participation in this prestigious cinematic event.

'Not a Hero' explores the life of a young boy as he navigates through both urban and rural settings, reshaping his perceptions of strength, masculinity, and belonging.

The film poses a significant question: what does it mean to be a hero in today's society?

Maintaining her characteristic observational and realistic approach, Das focuses on urban childhood for the first time, delving into the subtle pressures that children face as they mature.

The narrative unfolds with emotional subtlety, allowing silence and everyday moments to convey deeper meanings.

Filmed in Assamese, Hindi, and English, the cast includes Bhuman Bhargav Das, who previously starred in Das's 'Tora’s Husband,' alongside a group of non-professional actors.

This project marks Das's first collaboration with cinematographer Aditya Varma and is her first feature since 'Village Rockstars' to be shot with a dedicated director of photography.

Produced by Das's Flying River Films in partnership with Akanga Film Asia, the film combines scripted storytelling with real-life experiences, creating a unique and thought-provoking cinematic environment.

The story follows a young boy who is uprooted from his urban lifestyle to his ancestral village, where he meets a stern aunt, befriends a horse, and embarks on wild adventures with local children, ultimately uncovering a bravery he never knew he had.

Das shared that 'Not a Hero' emerged from her interest in how children perceive strength without the burden of fear or expectations. The film examines a form of courage that is based on kindness, awareness, and coexistence, fostering reflection across different generations.

The film is scheduled to premiere on February 14, 2026. This year's Generation section at Berlinale features 18 feature films and 23 short films from 31 countries, showcasing 30 world premieres and ten feature debuts.

Rima Das is celebrated for her deeply personal storytelling rooted in indigenous culture. In 2024, she became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Her films, including 'Village Rockstars,' 'Bulbul Can Sing,' 'Tora’s Husband,' and 'Village Rockstars 2,' have been showcased at over 150 international festivals, winning more than 75 awards globally, solidifying her status as one of India's most unique contemporary filmmakers.
