Ponting's Insights on Team Selection

As Australia evaluates its strategies during the ongoing Ashes series, former captain Ricky Ponting has expressed that the trust placed in Cameron Green has affected other players, particularly Beau Webster, who finds himself in a challenging position. Ponting remarked, "Beau Webster has unfortunately been the player caught in the middle this Australian summer. He performed well in his debut match, showcasing his skills effectively."

He continued, "When Webster traveled to the West Indies, he faced extremely tough conditions that challenged all batsmen. He was dismissed by a few nearly unplayable deliveries. Additionally, an early-season injury prevented him from participating in several Shield matches, which likely hindered his preparation compared to players like Marnus Labuschagne."

Webster's Potential Role

Ponting proposed that Webster could step in for Josh Inglis at the number 7 position, which would provide additional bowling support. He stated, "Unfortunately, Beau hasn't had the opportunity to establish himself, and I feel for him. He could be a candidate for the No.7 spot, possibly replacing Inglis to enhance our bowling options."

Since making his debut earlier this year in the final Test against India in Sydney, Webster has shown promising form, participating in seven Tests and accumulating 381 runs, including four half-centuries, along with taking eight wickets.

Expectations for Cameron Green

Despite the discussions surrounding team changes, Ponting emphasized the importance of patience regarding Green's role. He stated, "I believe they will continue to support him. The team values what he brings to the table. After around thirty Test matches, they are likely to stick with him and seek ways to maximize his potential. It's crucial for him to gain experience at the highest level to improve as a player."

Cameron Green has participated in 35 Tests since his debut against India in Adelaide five years ago, contributing 1,641 runs at an average nearing 33, along with claiming 37 wickets.

The fourth Test of the Ashes series is set to commence in Melbourne on December 26.
