M. Chinnaswamy Stadium Redevelopment and IPL Final Shift

On Friday, Venkatesh Prasad, the President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), announced that the redevelopment of the historic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is currently in progress. He noted that the stadium's limited seating capacity may have contributed to the decision to move the IPL 2026 final to Ahmedabad. During an event in Bengaluru, Prasad mentioned that the redesign and redevelopment efforts had commenced prior to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) relocating the IPL final from Bengaluru.

"The capacity of the stadium was likely a factor in the finals being moved from this venue. This redevelopment process had already started before that decision was made," Prasad stated.

Originally, the IPL had scheduled the final for May 31 in Bengaluru, but it was later transferred to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The IPL explained that this change was due to "certain requirements from the local association and authorities that exceeded BCCI's established guidelines and protocols."

Selection of Architects for Stadium Redesign

Prasad shared that the KSCA received a strong response to its global call for interest regarding the stadium's redevelopment. Approximately 28 architects with international experience expressed interest in the redesign, and the list has now been narrowed down to eight firms. The KSCA is in the process of selecting three or four architects who will present their conceptual designs for the project.

Enhancing Fan Experience and Infrastructure

Prasad also emphasized various initiatives implemented by the current KSCA administration for IPL 2026, which include improved crowd management, designated holding areas, efficient entry and exit systems, and enhanced security measures for fans. Additionally, he mentioned that KSCA has integrated public transport with match ticketing during the IPL season, a model that could be adopted in other cities across India.

New LED Floodlighting Initiative

The former Indian pacer announced a significant lighting project that will involve the installation of sports LED floodlights at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, SDNRW Stadium, and Rajnagar Stadium. Prasad stated that this upgraded lighting infrastructure would greatly enhance the fan experience and playing conditions at cricket venues throughout Karnataka.
