Residents of Palasbari Demand Urgent Action Against River Erosion
Protest Against Erosion and Poor Infrastructure
On January 9, residents of No. 1 Balasiddhi Balapara in the newly-formed Palasbari constituency in South Kamrup organized a significant protest, calling for immediate action to combat erosion caused by the Kalahi river and the construction of a reliable road in their locality.
The demonstrators voiced their frustrations against the government, effectively halting activities in the area. Locals criticized the previous geo-bag erosion control measures along the No. 1 Balasiddhi Balapara road, claiming that the substandard work led to the bags collapsing into the river shortly after installation. They also expressed their anger over the lack of a paved road, which has greatly disrupted their daily lives.
The poor condition of the roads has created serious challenges for residents, particularly for students attending schools and colleges, especially during the rainy season.
During the demonstration, women in the community appealed directly to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, chanting slogans that highlighted the government's inaction in the face of ongoing erosion-related damages.
They issued a warning that if political leaders seek their votes without addressing their pressing needs, they would consider boycotting the upcoming elections, emphasizing that their priorities are roads and erosion protection rather than food supplies.
Protesters noted that Palasbari MLA Hemanga Thakuria had promised development initiatives in the area about a year ago, yet no tangible progress has been made. They also expressed disappointment with both Hemanga Thakuria and Chhaygaon MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, accusing them of ignoring the region's persistent challenges.
