Erosion Threatens Homes in Killarbak
The erosion in Killarbak has a history; two years prior, the railway line in the vicinity collapsed due to similar issues.
Hailakandi, Sept 16: The residents of Killarbak village in southern Hailakandi are grappling with anxiety as the erosion caused by the Dhaleshwari river persists. So far, the relentless erosion has resulted in the loss of at least four homes and agricultural land, impacting fifteen families who now face an uncertain future as the riverbanks continue to erode daily.
This ongoing erosion in Killarbak, located near a railway bridge, is not a new phenomenon; approximately two years ago, the same area experienced a railway line collapse due to river erosion. At that time, the railway authorities implemented measures to safeguard the railway line.
Currently, with the Dhaleshwari river once again eroding its banks, the stability of the railway bridge and the rail line is at risk. Without immediate intervention, there is a looming threat of further collapses.
Kamrul Hussain Majumdar, a local resident, has already lost everything as his home was completely swept away. Similarly, Nurul Islam Majumdar's house has also succumbed to the river's force. The affected families are not only mourning their lost homes but are also filled with anxiety regarding their livelihoods and future.
Community members express that if urgent action is not taken to halt the erosion of the Dhaleshwari river, many more families could soon find themselves in similar predicaments. They are calling for the implementation of permanent erosion control measures to safeguard their homes, farmland, and vital infrastructure along the riverbanks.
Fakhrul Islam, a local panchayat member, has voiced serious concerns regarding the unchecked erosion and is urging government intervention to prevent further damage. He has also requested financial support for the families affected by the erosion, in accordance with government policies.
Islam mentioned that a memorandum has been submitted to the Hailakandi District Commissioner, advocating for measures to combat river erosion in Killarbak village and for government assistance for the impacted families. He emphasized the need for the administration to conduct an on-site inspection and take necessary actions promptly.
