Repeated Thefts at Jorhat Government Office Raise Security Concerns
Security Breach at Transformation & Development Department
On June 24, reports emerged that the Transformation & Development Department's office in Jorhat experienced three thefts within just one week, highlighting significant security failures and inadequate law enforcement response.
Despite numerous complaints and inspections by local police and district officials, the culprits remain unidentified and free.
Situated in Malow Ali, the building accommodates both the Economics & Statistics Office and the District Monitoring Cell.
The initial two thefts occurred on June 18 and 19, followed by another incident on June 23.
Thieves accessed the office by breaking through two doors, making off with various items, including copper wiring, bathroom taps, and other essential office supplies.
A junior assistant from the Economics and Statistics office, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted the distressing events.
"On June 18, we discovered missing items and promptly alerted the authorities. The police arrived, conducted an inspection, took photographs, and departed. However, the very next day, the thieves returned and stole more wiring and taps. The absence of CCTV cameras exacerbates the issue," they stated.
The situation worsened when the thieves struck again on June 23, stealing additional valuable office equipment and fixtures.
Jiten Bhuyan, the deputy director of Economics and Statistics, who is primarily based in Sivasagar, expressed his alarm over the situation.
"Upon learning about the thefts, I hurried from Sivasagar. The thieves took approximately 25 to 30 water taps, copper wiring, and more. We have discussed the issue with the Deputy Superintendent of Police, but the perpetrators remain at large. This ongoing theft has severely impacted our operations and raised serious concerns about the security of government facilities," he remarked.
Despite the district commissioner's visit and ongoing police inspections of the premises, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been identified.
As of this report, the police have not issued any statements regarding the alleged break-ins.
