Repair Work to Begin on Key Highway in Mizoram

The NHIDCL is preparing to commence urgent repairs on a critical section of National Highway-6/306 in Mizoram, which has been in disrepair. This highway is essential for connecting Aizawl with Assam's Silchar town. The repairs come at a time when Mizoram is facing a fuel crisis due to stranded oil tankers and trucks. Local officials are urging for swift action to restore the highway's condition, which has been exacerbated by uncoordinated repair efforts by local truckers. The situation highlights the importance of this highway for the state's supply chain.

Commencement of Repairs on National Highway-6/306

Aizawl, July 5: The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is set to initiate repair work on a deteriorating section of National Highway-6/306, which serves as a crucial lifeline for Mizoram.

On Saturday, NHIDCL's general manager, Binod Kr Srivastava, announced that officials from the state had discussions with senior authorities at the corporation's headquarters in New Delhi.

The relevant authorities directed the NHIDCL team in Mizoram to take control of the Bilkhawthlir-Kolasib and Kawnpui-Khamrang segments of the highway, which are currently in poor condition, from the state Public Works Department.

Srivastava indicated that work on the Kawnpui to Khamrang stretch is expected to commence within the next two days. He also mentioned that contractors have been instructed to prepare resources for the Bilkhawthlir-Kolasib section as soon as possible.

Next week, the new contractors will begin mobilizing their workforce and equipment.

Priority will be given to repairing potholes and patches using boulders, as well as cleaning drains and clearing landslides.

The main black-topping work is scheduled to start during the dry season.

The transfer of responsibilities for these sections will occur after a ground verification process with the Mizoram PWD, according to Srivastava.

NH-306 is vital for Mizoram, connecting Aizawl to Silchar in Assam. This highway, also referred to as NH-6, is the primary route for supplies coming from other states.

In related news, the state BJP president, Beichhua, inspected the damaged areas of the highway on Saturday and urged NHIDCL officials to expedite repairs.

He recommended that NHIDCL keep the state BJP office informed of any challenges they encounter and suggested deploying excavators to the most severely affected areas, as stated by the BJP.

Mizoram has been facing a fuel crisis for over a week, with oil tankers and trucks carrying essential goods stuck due to ongoing repairs on NH-306/6.

The Sairang–Kawnpui stretch, a critical part of the state's highway network, has been closed since June 26 after members of the Mizoram Tipper Association (MTA) in Kolasib began repairs on a badly damaged section.

Despite good intentions, the uncoordinated efforts by the truckers' association have halted the movement of fuel and supply vehicles, resulting in a shortage of petrol and diesel in Aizawl and surrounding areas.
