The world mourns the loss of Ram V. Sutar, the esteemed sculptor behind the Statue of Unity, who passed away at his residence in Noida on Thursday. According to local police, he was 100 years old and had been suffering from age-related ailments. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating on social media that he was deeply saddened by the news of Sutar's passing. He described Sutar as an extraordinary artist whose creativity contributed significantly to India's cultural heritage, including the iconic Statue of Unity located in Kevadia.

Final Honors for a Master Artist

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also paid tribute to the centenarian artist. The Chief Minister's office announced on social media that Fadnavis had requested that Sutar's mortal remains be accorded state honors during the funeral. This request was promptly accepted by the Uttar Pradesh government. Sutar's body will be cremated with state honors in Noida.

Ram V. Sutar is renowned for designing the 182-meter tall Statue of Unity. He was awarded a gold medal from the J.J. School of Art in Bombay. Celebrated for his expertise in bronze and realistic sculpture, Sutar gained international recognition for his works. His statue of Mahatma Gandhi is installed in over 450 cities worldwide. Sutar's creations have garnered global acclaim, attracting artists to his studio, and he is often compared to masters like Rodin and Michelangelo. The 522-foot Statue of Unity is dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Sutar was also involved in other notable projects, including a 600-foot statue of Lord Ram in Ayodhya and a 400-foot statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Mumbai.
