Imphal, Apr 14: New confrontations erupted on Tuesday between security personnel and demonstrators in the Thinungei region of Bishnupur district, resulting in injuries to at least four individuals.

The conflict escalated around midday, with reports from locals indicating that multiple rounds of tear gas and live ammunition were discharged during the altercations. However, there was no official statement regarding the type of force employed at the time of this report.

Some protesters, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed that vehicles suspected of transporting weapons were stopped, which they believe intensified the situation.

During the unrest, a mob set fire to at least one vehicle. In response, a significant number of security forces, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), have been deployed to restore order (see video).

Protesters have continued to establish roadblocks, causing significant disruptions to traffic in and around Thinungei.

Witnesses reported that demonstrators were inspecting vehicles, focusing on what they termed 'suspected vehicles.'

In the meantime, Manipur's Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam urged the public to remain patient regarding the ongoing investigation into the bomb attack in Tronglaobi, emphasizing that identifying those responsible would require time.

“Investigations cannot be concluded in just a day or two. It will take time to pinpoint the actual culprits. The government needs time to fulfill its responsibilities,” he stated.

He also called on residents statewide to cooperate with authorities, acknowledging public sentiment following the incident.

Regarding the relocation of camps associated with the banned group UNLF, the minister noted that this process is being conducted in line with the peace agreement established with the Government of India.

“According to the agreement, they must dismantle certain unauthorized camps. This process is currently in progress. We have already granted them some time and anticipate a favorable response,” he added.
