Honoring the Valor of 1971

New Delhi: On Vijay Diwas, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, paid tribute to the remarkable bravery displayed during the 1971 war, which marked a significant chapter in India's history.

Every year on December 16, India commemorates Vijay Diwas, celebrating its decisive triumph over Pakistan in the 1971 conflict that led to the independence of East Pakistan, now known as Bangladesh.

This date also marks the historic surrender of 93,000 Pakistani troops to the Indian Armed Forces and the Mukti Bahini in Dhaka, representing the largest military capitulation since World War II. It serves to honor the courage and sacrifices made by Indian soldiers who fought valiantly for the nation's honor and freedom.

In a message shared on X, Rahul Gandhi expressed, "On this Vijay Diwas, I honor the courageous heroes of our armed forces who, while safeguarding India's borders during the 1971 war, made history with their valor, commitment, and steadfast determination. Their unmatched bravery, struggle, and ultimate sacrifice will always inspire every Indian."

Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress National President, remarked that the victory in 1971, under the guidance of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, stands as a "great example of humanity and justice."

He noted, "On this day in 1971, history was created when the brave armed forces of India decisively overcame Pakistan, securing Bangladesh's independence and altering the world's map."

Kharge further stated, "Under the visionary and courageous leadership of Smt. Indira Gandhi ji, this victory exemplified humanity and justice. We extend our heartfelt tributes to the unparalleled courage, valor, and sacrifices of the Indian military and the Mukti Bahini. The dedication and sacrifice of these brave sons of Mother India will always be cherished by a grateful nation."

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also took to X to honor the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 1971 war, ensuring India's victory over Pakistan.

She stated, "On this day, our brave army set a benchmark of valor and heroism, making the nation proud. In 1971, our forces delivered a strong response to the war thrust upon us, achieving victory by compelling the surrender of the Pakistani army."

Praising her grandmother, Indira Gandhi, who was Prime Minister at the time, Priyanka added, "This historic victory not only reinforced India's unity but also established Indian strength on the global stage. Today, we remember the valor and military prowess of our army, along with the capable and courageous leadership of Smt. Indira Gandhi Ji.
