Record Voter Turnout in West Bengal Elections Raises Questions
Historic Voter Participation in West Bengal
West Bengal has achieved an unprecedented voter turnout of 92.88%, marking a historic moment in India's electoral history. This surpasses the previous record set in Puducherry earlier this year, where over 91% of voters participated. As the state reflects on past elections, questions arise about potential significant changes in the political landscape. The Election Commission has released figures for the first phase of voting, which involved 3.6 million voters across 152 constituencies, with 3.34 million casting their votes. This phase saw a remarkable 92.88% turnout, a notable increase compared to previous elections.
In 1991, the turnout was 76.89%, which rose to 82.94% in 1996, reflecting a 6.14% increase that maintained the Left government in power. By 2006, the turnout was 81.97%, and in 2011, it reached 86.06%, resulting in a shift of power to the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The 2021 elections saw a turnout of 81.56%, while the current phase has shown an increase of 11.32%. All eyes will be on the results to be announced on May 4, as the state prepares for the second phase of voting.
Interestingly, this election has seen a decrease of 4.2 million voters compared to the last assembly elections. This decline is attributed to the removal of deceased voters and illegal entries from the voter list, which previously inflated the turnout percentage. Consequently, while the total number of voters has decreased, the percentage of those voting has increased, leading to a higher turnout figure.
This situation illustrates how a smaller voter list can significantly impact turnout percentages. For instance, if 52 out of 100 registered voters cast their ballots, the turnout would be 52%. However, if the list is reduced to 60 voters and the same 52 participate, the percentage would skyrocket to 90%. This phenomenon has been observed in the current elections, particularly in the Basirhat region, where many names were removed from the voter list. The second phase of voting will be crucial in determining the final outcome.
