Unprecedented June Temperatures in Assam

Guwahati, June 11: Today, Jorhat experienced its highest June temperature ever, reaching a scorching 37.6 degrees Celsius. This extreme heat comes as the state endures a dry spell following an early and vigorous onset of the monsoon.

The previous record for June was 37.3 degrees, set in 1961. Historically, the maximum temperature in Jorhat has only exceeded 37 degrees on four occasions in June. Today's reading also ranks as the eighth highest temperature recorded in any month.

Dibrugarh recorded its fifth highest June temperature at 37.7 degrees, while North Lakhimpur reached 38 degrees, marking its sixth highest for the month. Tezpur recorded a temperature of 37.5 degrees, making it the tenth highest.

The Chief Minister highlighted the progress made under the NDA government, emphasizing the importance of peace, referencing the Bodo Peace Accord of 2020, and agreements with groups in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.

He mentioned the establishment of AIIMS Guwahati and other healthcare and educational institutions that have been set up or are in the pipeline.

Additionally, he discussed the proposed defense corridor.

Sarma urged the Assamese community to unite against illegal immigration, stating, "For our future and security, the Assamese people must adopt a non-compromising attitude. We have to help ourselves. Only then will any assistance from the Central government be worthwhile. Unfortunately, those who are speaking on behalf of the foreigners are also Assamese, including many Assamese lawyers. Congress is the party which objects to the pushback of illegal immigrants," he added.

He also noted that there are 2,895 Facebook accounts active in Assam that are being managed from outside the country, including from Pakistan and Bangladesh.
