Record-Breaking June Heat Hits Assam with Unprecedented Temperatures

Severe Heatwave Grips Assam
Guwahati, June 13: The state of Assam is currently experiencing extreme heat as temperatures soar due to a lack of significant rainfall.
On Thursday, Dibrugarh recorded an unprecedented June temperature of 38.7 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record of 38.2 degrees Celsius set in 2015 by 7.2 degrees.
This marks the fifth highest June temperature recorded in Dibrugarh, which had previously reached 37.7 degrees on June 10. Historically, temperatures in Dibrugarh have only exceeded 38 degrees on three occasions in June.
In Jorhat, the temperature also climbed to 38.2 degrees Celsius, breaking its own June record of 37.6 degrees from earlier this month.
North Lakhimpur recorded a temperature of 38.2 degrees, marking it as the fourth highest for June, while Guwahati reached 37.5 degrees Celsius.
Many regions across the state reported maximum temperatures that were 5 to 6 degrees above the seasonal average.
Rainfall data for the week ending June 11 indicates a significant shortfall, with only 16.9 mm recorded compared to the normal of 90.9 mm, resulting in an 81 percent deficit. However, forecasts from the IMD suggest some relief may arrive starting Friday.
