Seismic Activity Strikes Kutch District

Kutch: Just days before the anniversary of the catastrophic 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Gujarat in 2001, a 4.1 magnitude quake hit Khawda in Kutch district early Saturday morning, causing alarm among local residents.

Officials reported that the earthquake's epicenter was situated approximately 55 kilometers from Khawda, with the tremor occurring at 1:22 AM.

Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage; however, the unexpected shaking prompted many to flee their homes in various neighborhoods.

The tremor was particularly felt in the rural areas of the region.

This recent quake followed a 2.5 magnitude tremor recorded in Rapar the previous evening at around 5:47 PM.

The epicenter of that quake was near Khengarpar, roughly 19 kilometers from Rapar.

Later that same day, another quake measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale was detected in Bhachau, further heightening concerns among residents already anxious due to ongoing seismic activity.

In December of the previous year, over 17 aftershocks were documented following a 4.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred about 43 kilometers from Rapar.

On December 26 and 27, four tremors were recorded in Kutch, with two occurring in the Rapar area on both days, creating a climate of fear among locals.

The December 26 quake was measured at 4.6 on the Richter scale, significantly increasing anxiety in the community.

The sudden tremors led many residents to rush outside, resulting in chaotic scenes across several areas.

Officials noted that Kutch is situated in a seismically active zone, frequently experiencing minor to moderate tremors.

The local authorities are actively monitoring the situation and have urged residents to stay calm and disregard any rumors.

This resurgence of seismic activity has rekindled memories of the devastating 7.6-magnitude earthquake in 2001, known as the Bhuj earthquake, which occurred on January 26 at 8:46 AM.

The epicenter of that earthquake was located about 9 kilometers south-southwest of Chobari village in Bhachau taluka of Kutch district.

The 2001 disaster reached a maximum Mercalli intensity of XII, marking it as one of the most destructive earthquakes in India's history.

According to the United States Geological Survey's PAGER-CAT catalogue, the tragedy resulted in 20,023 fatalities.

Additionally, 166,836 individuals were injured, approximately 28 million people across Gujarat were impacted, and around 442 villages suffered at least 70% damage to their homes, leaving a profound impact on the region.
