Arrest in Judicial Officers' Gherao Incident

On April 1, a lawyer named Moffakkerul Islam was apprehended by the West Bengal Police for allegedly orchestrating the gherao of judicial officers in Malda district. Islam, hailing from the Itahar region of Uttar Dinajpur, was caught at Bagdogra airport while reportedly trying to flee the state. According to the North Bengal inspector general of police, a total of 35 individuals have been detained in connection with this incident.

The protest was sparked by claims of mass voter deletions during the electoral roll revision, leading to a group holding seven judicial officers, including three women, captive for several hours. They were ultimately released after the intervention of Chief Justice Sujoy Paul of the Calcutta High Court.

US Report Highlights Concerns Over India's Takedown Requests

A report from the United States government has indicated that the Indian authorities have increased the number of takedown requests directed at several American companies since 2021, suggesting these actions may be politically motivated. The document, titled the 2026 National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers, points out that India's Information Technology regulations impose several troubling requirements, including personal criminal liability for employees of firms that fail to comply.

The report also mentions that these regulations create unrealistic compliance deadlines and complicated takedown protocols.

Rajasthan High Court Revises Remarks on Transgender Bill

The Rajasthan High Court has retracted certain remarks that were perceived as critical of the 2026 Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Amendment Bill. The court clarified that these comments were unnecessary and included by mistake. In a ruling dated March 30, the court noted that the amendment bill undermines the right to self-identified gender, which was previously protected under the 2019 Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Act.

The retracted remarks also included a statement recognizing gender identity as an essential aspect of personhood, as acknowledged by the Supreme Court, and criticized the amendment for reducing it to a conditional entitlement managed by the state.

AAP Addresses Internal Disputes and National Issues

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has emphasized its commitment to addressing significant national challenges rather than focusing on less critical issues, following the removal of MP Raghav Chadha as deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha. Chadha had claimed that the party was attempting to silence him.

In a social media video, Saurabh Bharadwaj, the party's Delhi unit chief, challenged Chadha for not raising questions about the Prime Minister or the Bharatiya Janata Party government, asking how he could remain politically active if he was afraid. Former Chief Minister Atishi also questioned Chadha's reluctance to confront the BJP, implying fear of Narendra Modi.
