Guwahati, April 11: The re-polling in the Karimganj North constituency is currently taking place after the Election Commission of India (ECI) declared the voting held on April 9 invalid last Friday.

As per an official statement released by the Commission on April 10, this decision was made after reviewing reports from the field and considering all relevant circumstances surrounding the polling.

District Commissioner of Sribhumi district, Pradeep Kumar Dwivedi, stated, “Voting is proceeding peacefully. We anticipate that the process will continue without any issues under official supervision.”

When questioned about the reasons for the re-poll, Dwivedi mentioned that the matter is currently under investigation. He noted, “There was a disruption in the polling process, which led the Commission to conclude that a fresh election was necessary.”

Voter Debolina Deb Saha shared her thoughts, stating that the voting on April 9 seemed to go smoothly. She remarked, “When we arrived that day, everything appeared to be in order. Later, we heard there might have been a problem with the EVM. This time, the process is also going well.”

The ECI utilized provisions from Section 58(2)(A) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, to annul the election at the specified polling station.

The polling station affected is situated at Baby Land English High School within the 123-Karimganj North Assembly constituency.

The directive has been communicated to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Assam, with orders to ensure that the re-poll is widely publicized in the relevant area.

Officials have also been instructed to notify political parties and candidates in writing to ensure the smooth execution of the re-voting process.

Furthermore, the Commission has mandated strict compliance with the guidelines set forth in Chapter 13 of the Handbook for Returning Officers, 2023, to maintain transparency and integrity during the re-poll.
