Guwahati, April 11: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has mandated a re-poll at a specific polling station within the Karimganj North Assembly constituency this Saturday, following the annulment of the voting that took place on April 9.

While the ECI did not disclose the precise reasons for declaring the earlier poll void, such actions are generally taken due to disruptions, procedural errors, or complaints that could compromise the voting integrity.

On April 10, the Commission released an official statement indicating that the decision was made after reviewing reports from the field and considering “all material circumstances” related to the polling.

The ECI utilized provisions from Section 58(2)(A) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, to invalidate the election at the designated station.

This polling station is situated at Baby Land English High School, which falls under the 123-Karimganj North Assembly constituency.

The directive has been communicated to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Assam, instructing them to ensure that the re-poll is widely publicized in the relevant area.

Additionally, authorities have been tasked with notifying political parties and candidates in writing to facilitate a smooth re-voting process.

The ECI has also mandated strict adherence to all guidelines specified in Chapter 13 of the Handbook for Returning Officers, 2023, during the re-poll.

The Commission has stressed the importance of following procedural safeguards to uphold transparency and credibility in the electoral process.

Officials, including Observers and District Election Officers, have been directed to stay informed and ensure compliance with the Commission’s directives.

This development occurs amidst crucial Assembly elections in Assam, where voter turnout has been notably high across various constituencies.

The re-poll aims to guarantee that voters at the affected booth can exercise their voting rights freely and fairly.
