Ashwin's Concerns Over Selection Decisions

Ravichandran Ashwin, a former off-spinner for India, has voiced his concerns regarding the exclusion of Suryakumar Yadav from the T20I team. He believes this decision could set a significant precedent for future selections, especially considering Yadav's recent success in leading the team to a T20 World Cup victory just two months prior. Despite this achievement, Suryakumar's performance during the World Cup was underwhelming, as he scored 242 runs with a strike rate of 136.72. His struggles continued in the IPL, where he accumulated 270 runs at a strike rate of 147.54.

A Landmark Day in Selection

During a discussion on a video show, Ashwin empathized with Yadav's feelings about being dropped. He stated, "It's a very interesting precedent. I can only imagine how Suryakumar must feel right now. Every player has the right to feel disappointed about being excluded, and that's completely understandable."

He further elaborated, "The manner in which this decision was made raises some concerns for me. I think about Suryakumar's situation: while his batting form has not been at its peak recently, he played a crucial role in winning the T20 World Cup for India."

Ashwin emphasized that despite not having the best World Cup as a batter, Yadav contributed significantly to the team's success, just like other key players.

Implications for Future Selections

Ashwin warned that this decision could influence how selectors handle similar situations in the future. He questioned whether a captain who has led a team to a T20 World Cup victory has ever been dropped without prior notice. He expressed confidence that there must have been communication regarding this decision but highlighted its potential to become a reference point for future selections.

Shreyas Iyer's New Role as Captain

The selectors have appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new T20I captain, despite his absence from T20I matches for over two years. Iyer has, however, demonstrated strong leadership in franchise cricket, leading the Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title in 2024 and guiding the Punjab Kings to the finals in 2025.

While Ashwin supports Iyer's captaincy, he raised concerns about the implications of promoting a player from outside the World Cup-winning squad. He noted, "If I were one of the other players from the World Cup-winning team, I might question why someone else is being chosen as captain over us."

Ashwin acknowledged Iyer's successful IPL captaincy but stressed the importance of maintaining team dynamics and ethos. He pointed out that if the vice-captain cannot step up as captain, it raises questions about the team's leadership structure.

Ongoing Discussions in Indian Cricket

Ashwin concluded that while Iyer's leadership skills are commendable, the circumstances surrounding Yadav's exclusion and the new captaincy will likely remain hot topics in Indian cricket.
